Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Young people aged 12 to 18 years old at the time of enrollment
  • People who are currently detained at San Luis Obispo (SLO) County Juvenile Hall in California, with an expected stay of at least 8 weeks when the trial begins
  • People with a documented history of, or who are considered at risk for, a mental health condition (such as depression, anxiety, or stress) or a substance use disorder
  • People with a basic understanding of English (accommodations for limited reading ability are available)
  • People whose parent, guardian, or legally authorised representative provides consent, and who themselves agree to take part
  • People who are willing to take part in the Heal intervention, journaling activities, and questionnaires
  • People who are selected through a fair process involving facility behavioural health staff, based only on the stated criteria

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who are not between the ages of 12 and 18, or who are not currently detained at SLO County Juvenile Hall
  • People whose expected detention is less than 8 weeks at the start of the trial
  • People who onsite staff determine cannot safely participate due to medical or psychiatric reasons
  • People who are unable to give their own agreement to participate, or whose parent, guardian, or legally authorised representative does not provide consent
  • People whose consent process would require more time than the research design allows (confirm with trial site)
  • People who cannot understand basic English, even with literacy support
  • People who are unwilling to take part in the intervention, journaling, or questionnaires
  • People who are currently pregnant, or who become pregnant during the study — individuals in this situation would be withdrawn from the trial due to potential unknown risks related to the device (which involves sound, vibration, or lighting)
  • People whose participation may be influenced by coercion, such as enrollment being connected to privileges or probation outcomes
  • People with severe cognitive or behavioural difficulties that would prevent safe or meaningful participation
