Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who have been diagnosed with rectal cancer confirmed through physical examination, a camera examination of the bowel (colonoscopy), and a tissue sample (biopsy).

• People whose bowel and anal muscles were working normally before any surgery.

• People who have been assessed as being in a suitable general health category for anaesthesia, rated 3 or below on a standard medical scoring scale used by anaesthetists.

Who may not be able to join:

• People whose cancer has spread to other parts of the body (distant metastasis).
• People whose cancer has been identified as a specific type known as undifferentiated carcinoma or mucinous adenocarcinoma.
