Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 80 years of age or older
- People who have had a confirmed diagnosis of atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat) shown on a heart tracing test (ECG) or a monitoring device (Holter monitor) within the past 6 months
- People who experience symptoms related to atrial fibrillation, such as a racing or fluttering heartbeat, chest tightness, tiredness, dizziness, fainting, or shortness of breath
- People who are willing to take part and have signed a consent form agreeing to join the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People with the most severe stage of heart failure (known as NYHA Class IV)
- People who have had a heart attack, heart surgery, or a procedure to open blocked heart arteries within the past year
- People whose atrial fibrillation has been continuous for more than one year
- People whose left atrial chamber (a part of the heart) is larger than a certain size, as measured by imaging (confirm with trial site)
- People who have previously had a procedure to treat atrial fibrillation using ablation (a technique that uses energy to correct abnormal heart rhythms)
- People whose atrial fibrillation is caused by a temporary or treatable condition, such as recovery from surgery, an infection, or an overactive thyroid
- People with a serious narrowing of one of the heart valves called the mitral valve
- People with moderate to severe liver disease
- People with advanced kidney disease or who are on ongoing dialysis
- People who are unable to cooperate with the trial due to dementia or a severe mental health condition
- People who have a blood clot present in a part of the heart called the left atrial appendage
- People who have previously had a procedure to close off the left atrial appendage (known as LAAO)
- People for whom blood-thinning medication is not considered safe or suitable
- People whose life expectancy is estimated to be less than one year
