- Children who are having heart surgery or a heart procedure called cardiac catheterization (a procedure where a thin tube is guided through blood vessels to the heart)
Who may not be able to join:
- Children who are already on a breathing machine (ventilator) or have a breathing tube in their throat and are sedated (in a medically induced sleep)
- Children and families who do not speak the language used in the study, and where no interpreter is available to help them understand the study and give their agreement to take part, and/or complete the study questionnaires
- Children who need emergency surgery or an emergency heart procedure
- Children who pass away during the course of the study
