Who may be able to join

AI generated eligibility summary. Written by an AI model from the official source data and checked on a sample basis. It can contain mistakes, so confirm anything important against the original source. How we use AI

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 or older
  • People who are scheduled (not emergency) for a planned left-sided bowel removal surgery that includes joining the bowel back together (anastomosis), such as a left hemicolectomy, sigmoid resection, or partial mesorectal excision (PME)
  • People having this surgery for either a non-cancerous or cancerous reason
  • People joining the prospective (forward-looking) part of the study must be able to sign a consent form
  • People who had one of these qualifying surgeries at a participating hospital between 2023 and 2025 may be considered for the retrospective (past records) part of the study

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who had or are planned for a total mesorectal excision (TME), which is a different, more extensive type of rectal surgery (confirm with trial site)
  • People having surgery on the right side of the bowel, or any bowel operation that falls outside the specific procedures defined by the study
  • People whose surgery did not or will not involve joining the bowel back together — for example, those who had or will have a permanent stoma (bag) without reconnection
  • People having emergency or urgent bowel surgery rather than a planned procedure
  • People in the prospective group who are not able to provide written consent
