Who might be able to join this trial:

• You are between 18 and 60 years old
• You have been diagnosed with sciatica (leg pain caused by a compressed nerve) in one leg, caused by a slipped disc in your lower back
• Your MRI scan shows a single slipped disc at one of three specific levels in your lower back (L3/4, L4/5, or L5/S1)
• Your symptoms have been present for at least 6 weeks
• Your leg pain rates at 5 or higher on a pain scale of 0 to 10
• You have already tried at least one non-surgical treatment (such as physiotherapy or medication) without enough improvement
• You are willing to have surgery if needed
• You are willing and able to give your consent and follow the study's procedures
• You have a good enough understanding of the language used at the trial site to give consent and take part

Who may not be able to join:

• There is uncertainty about whether a nerve root is actually being compressed (confirm with trial site)
• You have spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal) or another spine condition that could affect the results
• Your slipped disc is in a specific position at the far outer side of the spine, known as a far lateral disc herniation
• You have a serious loss of nerve function, such as significant weakness or loss of feeling
• You have had previous surgery on your spine
• You have any reason why you cannot have an MRI scan (such as a pacemaker or certain metal implants)
• Your body mass index (BMI) is over 35, or the layer of fat in your lower back is greater than 50mm as measured on your MRI
• You have significant underlying health conditions that make you a higher risk for surgery (confirm with trial site)
• You are currently pregnant
