Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between 18 and 70 years of age.
- People who have had one major lower limb amputation, either below the knee, above the knee, or through the knee joint.
- People whose pre-operative X-rays show no abnormal bone growth in the remaining part of the limb (confirm with trial site).
- People who have been diagnosed with a painful nerve lump (neuroma), confirmed by a combination of a nerve pain questionnaire score, a pain rating score, a physical examination finding, and an ultrasound scan showing the neuroma.
- People who are already scheduled to have a specific nerve surgery called RPNI as part of their standard medical care, due to difficulty tolerating a prosthetic limb or severe pain.
- People who are willing and able to give informed consent and attend follow-up appointments.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have been diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (a chronic pain condition affecting the nervous system).
- People who need additional bone-related surgery on the remaining limb at the same time, such as bone shortening or removal of abnormal bone growths, or who already have abnormal bone growth in the residual limb.
- People with poorly controlled diabetes (based on a specific blood test result) or severe blood vessel disease in the limbs that could affect wound healing.
- People with cognitive difficulties or psychiatric conditions that would prevent them from reliably completing the required questionnaires used in the trial.
- People who have previously had RPNI surgery at the same site.
