Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 years or older
  • People who have a medical reason to receive non-invasive brain stimulation, such as a depressive episode (including unipolar or bipolar depression) or symptoms mainly related to depression, such as negative symptoms in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders
  • People whose depression has not responded well enough to standard first-line treatments, or who prefer brain stimulation as a treatment option
  • People who are able to understand the trial and are willing to sign a written consent form

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who are currently at acute risk of suicide
  • People who have a significant neurological condition, such as increased pressure in the brain, a growth or mass in the brain, a stroke within the last 12 months, or an unexpected brain abnormality found on an MRI scan that needs further investigation
  • People who have metal implants that cannot be removed in or near the area of the brain to be stimulated — for example, cochlear implants, implanted nerve stimulators, or metal clips or nails (this applies specifically to the TMS form of brain stimulation)
  • People who have other metal implants in the body that may be affected by the treatment — for example, a cardiac pacemaker (this also applies specifically to TMS)
