Who might be able to join this trial:
- People whose first language is American English
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who have been clinically diagnosed with Parkinson's disease or essential tremor
- People whose treating doctor determines they are able to give informed consent
- People who have received deep brain stimulation (DBS) — a surgically implanted device that sends electrical signals to the brain — in a specific brain region related to their condition (subthalamic nucleus for Parkinson's disease, or ventral intermediate nucleus for essential tremor)
- People whose medication for Parkinson's disease or essential tremor has remained unchanged for at least one month
- People whose DBS device settings have remained unchanged for at least one month
- People whose DBS device is functioning normally, with adequate battery or charging status
- People who have a specific type of DBS device implanted — either a Medtronic Percept PC or Percept RC model
- People with vision (with glasses or contacts if needed) good enough to read text on a screen during the study tasks
Who may not be able to join:
- People with significant cognitive (thinking or memory) difficulties, as measured by a standard assessment tool, or those with active psychiatric or behavioural symptoms that the investigator believes would prevent proper participation
- People with hearing difficulties that would make it hard to accurately hear speech sounds used in the study tasks (confirm with trial site for specific hearing threshold details)
- People with a language or speech condition — such as difficulty finding words (aphasia) or slurred/unclear speech (dysarthria) — that would prevent them from completing the speech tasks
- People with a neurological condition (other than their Parkinson's disease or essential tremor) that would interfere with speech and motor learning
- People who are unable to tolerate their symptoms when their DBS device is temporarily turned off
- People with braces, dental devices, or an unusual mouth or palate structure that would affect their speech
- People who are pregnant
- For one specific part of the study, people who have prior experience with any of the following languages: Hebrew, Polish, Lithuanian, Romanian, Georgian, Tepehua, Hungarian, or Pima
