Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 years or older
- People who arrive at the emergency department with a high blood pressure reading (top number above 180 and/or bottom number above 110), confirmed by a second similar reading taken at least 30 minutes later
- People who may have already received some treatment for high blood pressure during their emergency department visit, as long as there are no signs of damage to major organs such as the brain, heart, or kidneys, and no swelling behind the eyes
- People who are well enough to be sent home from the emergency department, or who are admitted only because of high blood pressure with no other complications
- People referred from a clinic to the emergency department with blood pressure readings in the range described above
- People who are able to give their agreement to take part in the study — the trial is designed to be accessible to people of all reading and writing abilities
- People who are able to receive phone calls and in-person visits — a smartphone is not required, as the trial works with standard phones
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are pregnant
- People who have a terminal illness
- People who need to be admitted to hospital because of serious complications beyond high blood pressure alone
