Who may be able to join
- A diagnosis of stage IV non-small cell lung cancer (a type of lung cancer) has been confirmed through laboratory testing of tissue or cell samples, using 2024 staging guidelines.
- The cancer has spread to more than 5 spots in the body (across any number of organs); if the cancer has spread to the brain, the person must be conscious and alert; the number of spots in the lung must not be seriously affecting breathing or preventing possible radiation treatment to the main tumour.
- The person has either had no prior cancer treatment, or has had their disease kept under control with 1–3 months of a single targeted therapy drug, or has had their disease kept under control after 4–6 cycles of chemotherapy combined with immunotherapy.
- The person is between 18 and 80 years old, is reasonably active and able to care for themselves (as measured by standard medical scoring tools), and has no medical reasons preventing them from receiving radiotherapy, targeted therapy, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy.
- Major organs (heart, liver, kidneys, and blood) are functioning within normal ranges on laboratory tests, and lung function is at least moderately preserved (a breathing test result above 50% of expected).
- The person has read and signed a consent form before starting any treatment in the trial.
- The person is willing and able to follow the treatment plan and attend all follow-up appointments.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People with earlier-stage lung cancer (stage I–III), those with 5 or fewer spots of spread, those with stage IV lung cancer where fluid has built up around the lungs or heart due to cancer, or those with a low general health score.
- People whose cancer has spread so extensively to the liver or lungs that these organs are severely affected.
- People with uncontrolled high blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes, unstable chest pain, a past heart attack, heart failure symptoms in the last 12 months, uncontrolled irregular heartbeat, a diagnosed heart valve condition, an active serious infection (bacterial, fungal, or viral), a mental health disorder, or severely reduced lung function.
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People who have or have had another active cancer before joining the trial (other than non-small cell lung cancer), with the exception of certain skin cancers, early cervical changes (carcinoma in situ), or early-stage prostate cancer that has been fully cured.
- People with known or suspected serious allergies to any of the drugs used in the trial, where no alternative medication is available.
- People who are unlikely to follow the treatment plan, or those considered unsuitable for the trial by the medical team running the study.
