Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Adults aged 65 years or older, of any sex, gender, or ethnic background
  • People who have a knee replacement surgery (not a revision of a previous knee replacement) scheduled within the next week to two months
  • People who report being in good general health, without conditions that could be affected by deep, controlled breathing — such as COPD, serious heart failure, complete heart block, glaucoma, or epilepsy
  • People without conditions that affect the body's cortisol (stress hormone) levels or that require steroid treatments — such as Cushing's syndrome, Addison's disease, pituitary tumours, adrenal gland tumours, or asthma
  • People without severe psychiatric or cognitive conditions that require a legal representative to make decisions on their behalf
  • People who are able to understand written and spoken English

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who are currently taking steroid medications in any form — including tablets, injections, nasal sprays, creams, or inhalers (for example: prednisone, hydrocortisone, dexamethasone, or similar medications)
  • People who do not have access to a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer, or who do not have reliable internet access
  • People who experience serious surgical complications that require them to remain in hospital past the second day after surgery — such as needing a breathing machine, severe pain, severe nausea or vomiting, or signs of infection (this may affect the ability to continue in the trial after joining)
