Who might be able to join this trial:

This trial has three separate groups. A person may be considered for one of the following groups:

Group 1 – People with Type 1 Diabetes:

• People who have been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes according to World Health Organization diagnostic guidelines
• People who are able and willing to attend 12 hours of structured diabetes education sessions
• People who are able and willing to attend regular follow-up appointments at an outpatient clinic
• People who are willing to take part voluntarily and sign a consent form

Group 2 – Close (First-Degree) Relatives of People with Type 1 Diabetes:

• People who are a parent, child, or sibling of someone with Type 1 diabetes
• People aged 4 years or older
• People who are able and willing to attend regular follow-up appointments at an outpatient clinic
• People who are willing to take part voluntarily and sign a consent form

Group 3 – Healthy Individuals:

• People aged 40 years or older
• People with no history of diabetes
• People whose fasting blood sugar, post-glucose-load blood sugar, and long-term blood sugar marker (HbA1c) are all within normal ranges (confirm specific values with trial site)
• People who are willing to take part voluntarily and sign a consent form

Who may not be able to join:

Group 1 – People with Type 1 Diabetes:

• People whose diabetes is not classified as Type 1
• People who have serious eye complications from diabetes (such as proliferative retinopathy)
• People who have significant kidney damage from diabetes, based on protein levels in urine or kidney function test results (confirm specific values with trial site)
• People who have painful nerve damage from diabetes that is not well controlled, or significant nerve damage affecting automatic body functions
• People who have had a stroke, heart attack, serious limb blood vessel problems, vascular surgery, or amputation in the 3 months before joining the trial
• People whose blood pressure is consistently very high and cannot be brought down to an acceptable level within one week (confirm specific values with trial site)
• People whose kidney filtration function is significantly reduced, or whose liver enzyme or bilirubin levels are markedly elevated for more than one week (confirm specific values with trial site)
• People who have used certain medications that can affect blood sugar levels for more than one week within the past 12 weeks — for example, steroid tablets or injections, growth hormone, oestrogen or progesterone, high-dose water tablets, or antipsychotic medicines (note: low-dose water tablets used for blood pressure control, and thyroid hormone at a standard replacement dose, are exceptions — confirm with trial site)
• People who have a current widespread infection or another serious illness
• People who have been diagnosed with cancer or have ongoing chronic diarrhoea
• People with serious difficulties with thinking, memory, or mental health that may prevent them from completing the study
• People who are unwilling or unable to cooperate with follow-up visits, or where the trial doctor considers completion of the study unlikely
• People considered unsuitable by the trial investigator for any other reason

Group 2 – Close (First-Degree) Relatives of People with Type 1 Diabetes:

• People who have already been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes
• People who are second-degree relatives (such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, or cousins) rather than first-degree relatives
• People who are unable to complete regular outpatient follow-up visits

Group 3 – Healthy Individuals:

• People who have a first-degree or second-degree relative (such as a parent, sibling, child, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or cousin) who has been definitively diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes
