Who might be able to join this trial:

Set A (main study group):

  • Young people aged 12 to 18 who are experiencing elevated depressive symptoms, based on specific depression questionnaire scores (including feelings of sadness or loss of interest), as measured at a screening appointment
  • People who are already allowed to participate in gym class or sports at school, or who have been medically cleared by a doctor to do so
  • People who are able to read and write in English
  • People who are able to give their own agreement to participate (and, where required by age, have a parent or guardian also agree)
  • People who are able to attend scheduled group session times
  • People who have access to a private space once a week that is suitable for online sessions

Set B (secondary group, for those who do not meet Set A criteria):

  • Young people aged 12 to 18 with elevated depressive symptoms based on slightly different questionnaire score thresholds (confirm with trial site), including feelings of sadness or loss of interest
  • People who meet the same gym, language, consent, attendance, and private space requirements as Set A above

Who may not be able to join:

Both Set A and Set B share these exclusion criteria:

  • People who have ever been diagnosed with bipolar I disorder, or who currently have a psychotic disorder, or who currently have anorexia or bulimia, or who are currently receiving treatment for anorexia or bulimia
  • People who have had a significant substance use disorder in the past 12 months where current symptoms are severe enough to interfere with taking part in the study
  • People whose depression is rated as severe based on a specific questionnaire score (a score of 16 or higher on the QIDS-A-CR)
  • People who are assessed as being at moderate or high risk for suicide based on specific screening questions covering the past 3 months
  • People who are pregnant
  • People who have attended yoga classes or a specific type of group therapy (group cognitive behavioural therapy) in the past 4 weeks
  • People who have a sibling or another person living in the same household currently taking part in the same study intervention

Set A only:

  • People who have had significant changes to their mental health treatment in the past 4 weeks (for example, starting a new depression medication, or starting or stopping psychotherapy)
  • People who have thoughts of suicide (based on a specific screening question) and are not currently receiving any mental health treatment such as medication or therapy
