Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 18 and 80 years old (inclusive)
- You have been diagnosed with a specific type of irregular heartbeat called non-valvular persistent atrial fibrillation, at least one medication to control the heart rhythm has not worked for you, and you are scheduled to have your first ablation procedure
- You are willing to take part and able to sign a consent form (or have a legal guardian or witness who can do so on your behalf if needed)
Who may not be able to join:
- Your atrial fibrillation is caused by a heart valve problem, or your irregular heartbeat comes and goes on its own (paroxysmal atrial fibrillation)
- Your heart function is severely reduced or your heart's left upper chamber is enlarged beyond a certain size (confirm with trial site)
- You have a significant thickening of the heart muscle wall (confirm with trial site)
- You are currently experiencing a heart attack or need a stent placed in a blood vessel
- You have had heart surgery in the past 6 months or have previously had a catheter ablation procedure
- You have had atrial fibrillation for 5 years or longer
- You have an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism)
- You have both atrial fibrillation and a disease affecting the heart muscle (cardiomyopathy)
- You have a slow or irregular heartbeat that requires a pacemaker
- You have a known bleeding disorder, a blood clot in the left side of your heart, or serious problems with blood clotting
- You have severe liver or kidney problems (confirm with trial site for specific levels)
- You are allergic to any ingredients in the study medication
- You are currently taking part in another clinical trial, or have done so in the past 3 months
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or are not expected to live longer than 12 months
- You have a mental illness, significant cognitive impairment, or are critically ill
- The trial doctor considers there to be any other reason that participation would not be appropriate for you
