- People for whom keyhole surgery or the specific internal joining technique used in this trial is not considered medically safe, including those assessed as having very severe overall health risks under a standard anaesthesia classification system (ASA level IV or V)
- People whose cancer has already spread to distant parts of the body (stage IV)
- People whose colon cancer has returned after a previous surgery
- People who have another separate cancer present in a different organ at the same time
- People who are having surgery aimed at relieving symptoms only (palliative surgery), or surgery to manage complications of the tumour, rather than surgery intended to remove the cancer completely
- People who would be unlikely to complete follow-up appointments or be reachable for contact after the trial
