Who might be able to join this trial:
- People between 18 and 80 years of age
- People who have had acid reflux (GERD) symptoms, including troublesome regurgitation (stomach contents coming back up), for more than 6 months, even while taking at least 40 mg of acid-reducing medication (called a PPI) daily
- People whose regurgitation symptoms occur at least twice a week (if mild) or more than one day a week (if moderate to severe)
- People who have completed symptom questionnaires about their reflux, both while taking and after stopping their acid-reducing medication for at least 7 days
- People whose acid reflux has been confirmed by a special test (a small wireless probe placed in the food pipe that measures acid levels over 2 days), showing abnormally high acid exposure when off medication
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a serious ongoing illness that is not well managed
- People with a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) above 35
- People with ulcers or narrowing in the food pipe (oesophagus)
- People with Barrett's oesophagus (a change in the lining of the food pipe) measuring more than 2 cm
- People with a hiatal hernia (where part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm) larger than 2 cm
- People with severe inflammation of the food pipe (classified as Los Angeles grade C or D)
- People with peptic ulcer disease (ulcers in the stomach or upper digestive tract)
- People with gastroparesis (a condition where the stomach empties too slowly)
- People who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant within the next 12 months
- People who have a weakened immune system or are taking medications that suppress the immune system
- People with high blood pressure in the liver's blood vessels (portal hypertension)
- People with blood clotting problems (coagulopathy)
