For the control group (people without diabetes or cholesterol problems):

You have given written agreement to take part in the study

You have a cholesterol or blood fat disorder, or take medication to treat one
You have a history of heart disease, stroke, or blocked arteries
You have reduced kidney function below a certain level (confirm with trial site)
You have a condition called "metabolic syndrome," which is diagnosed when you have at least three of the following: a large waist measurement, high triglycerides, low "good" cholesterol, high blood pressure, or high fasting blood sugar

For the Type 1 diabetes group only:

You were diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes less than 12 months ago
Your kidney function is below a certain level (confirm with trial site)
You have a significant amount of protein in your urine, which may indicate kidney problems
You started taking cholesterol-lowering medication within the month before the study begins
You start taking cholesterol-lowering medication during the 3-month study period
