Who might be able to join this trial:
General requirements (all participants):
- People who can read and understand Danish
- Adults aged over 18 years who are able to make their own legal decisions
- People who study staff have assessed as able to understand the study, follow the procedures, attend hospital appointments at agreed times, and complete the trial
People who have had surgery for rectal cancer (LARS group):
- People who have had rectal cancer surgery that preserved the sphincter muscle, at least three months after their operation
- People who had a temporary stoma bag (ileostomy) that has since been reversed, at least three months after the reversal
People with bowel leakage problems (fecal incontinence group):
- People who are planned to receive a nerve stimulation treatment for bowel control problems
- People whose initial test of the nerve stimulation device produced good enough results to go ahead with having a permanent device implanted
People on a "watch and wait" programme:
- People with rectal or colon cancer who were treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy (without surgery to remove the organ), and who have shown a complete response in both physical examination and scans, at least 12 months after finishing treatment
Who may not be able to join:
General reasons that may affect all groups:
- People who are unable to understand the information provided about the trial
- People who have connective tissue disorders
- People who have Parkinson's disease
- People who have a pacemaker, surgical clips, or other metal objects in the body that are not safe for MRI scanning (note: people with a sacral nerve stimulation pacemaker will not have an MRI after their operation)
- People who have piercings that cannot be removed before an MRI scan
- People who experience severe anxiety in enclosed spaces (claustrophobia)
- People who have a latex allergy
- People whose abdominal (stomach) measurement is 140 cm or more around
- People where a doctor or healthcare professional considers there are individual reasons that make participation unsafe (confirm with trial site)
- People already participating in another clinical trial
- People with a known bowel blockage, significant narrowing of the bowel, or a hole in the bowel (if there is any doubt about narrowing, further tests may be done first)
- People who have difficulty swallowing
- People who are pregnant
Additional reasons that may apply to the rectal cancer surgery (LARS) group:
- People who have had a leak from the surgical join in their bowel following their rectal cancer operation
- People who have signs that their cancer has come back locally or spread to other parts of the body
