Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have scored 7 or higher on a standard nerve damage screening tool called the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument, which indicates abnormal nerve function
- People who are able to walk 10 metres barefoot without using a walking aid such as a cane or frame
- People who report either a fear of falling or who have had at least one fall in the past 12 months
- People whose memory and thinking skills are within the normal range, based on a standard cognitive test called the Mini-Mental State Examination (a score above 25)
- People who have noticed problems with moving around, walking, or keeping their balance in everyday life
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have other nerve-related conditions, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, nerve damage caused by cancer, or nerve damage caused by infection
- People who have severe damage to the blood vessels in the eyes as a complication of diabetes (severe retinopathy)
- People whose ankle or foot movement is restricted due to a fracture or tightening of the tissues (contracture)
- People who currently have an open sore or wound on the sole of their foot (active plantar ulcer)
- People who have had a recent surgery or injury affecting the foot or lower leg
- People who have a bone or muscle condition that affects the way they walk, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, muscular dystrophy, or hip dysplasia
- People who are currently taking part in another rehabilitation or exercise training programme at the same time
