Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are members of the relevant Association, or who are interested in joining it
- People who have been diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease at stages 2–3 on the Hoehn & Yahr scale, as confirmed by a neurologist
- People who are able to walk on their own for at least 1 minute and turn around 180 degrees without help
- People who have speech symptoms consistent with hypokinetic dysarthria (a type of speech difficulty associated with Parkinson's disease)
- People who have been on a stable Parkinson's medication (dopaminergic therapy) for at least 1 month before the study begins
Who may not be able to join:
- People for whom the ear stimulation device used in this trial (taVNS) would be medically unsuitable — for example, those with ear injuries, a pacemaker, a defibrillator, or other implanted electronic devices
- People who have previously had a vagotomy (a specific nerve surgery), electrical stimulation applied to the ear or brain, or a treatment called high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)
- People whose voice or speech difficulties are caused by a condition other than Parkinson's disease
- People who score below 21 on a memory and thinking assessment called the MoCA test
- People who experience psychotic symptoms or hallucinations, or who have a diagnosed psychiatric illness
- People with a blood pressure reading above 160/100 mmHg
- People who would be unable to attend the required sessions
- People who have another neurological, bone or joint, heart, breathing, or active medical or cancer-related condition that could affect their ability to take part
