Who may be able to join
For patients:
- A doctor has confirmed a diagnosis of primary lung cancer through laboratory or tissue testing.
- Male patients must be 22 years of age or older; female patients must be 20 years of age or older.
- The patient has already had lung cancer surgery and is scheduled to start their first round of radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy.
- The patient scores 13 or higher on a specific questionnaire (called the FCRI-SF) that measures moderate-to-severe fear of cancer coming back.
- The patient's general physical functioning meets a certain level, rated 2 or below on a standard medical scale called the ECOG scale (confirm with trial site).
- The patient knows about their diagnosis and is willing to take part voluntarily.
- The patient has normal cognitive (thinking and memory) function, as measured by a standard test called the MoCA (score of 26 or above), and is able and willing to communicate clearly.
For spouse caregivers:
- The spouse has been identified by the patient as their main caregiver, providing more than half of the care over the past two weeks.
- The caregiver is legally married to the patient.
- Male caregivers must be 22 years of age or older; female caregivers must be 20 years of age or older.
- The caregiver has normal cognitive function (MoCA score of 26 or above), has no diagnosed mental health conditions, and is able and willing to communicate clearly.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
For patients:
- The patient has a diagnosed mental health condition or is currently receiving psychiatric treatment.
- The patient has a personality disorder, intellectual disability, memory disorder, brain injury, or neurological disease.
- The patient has cancer in another organ at the same time.
- The patient has serious complications, such as chest pain or difficulty breathing caused by the tumour spreading to surrounding areas.
- The patient's spouse caregiver is unwilling to take part in the trial.
- The patient has a history of fractures or surgery to the upper limbs that has affected the use of their hands.
- The patient is already taking part in another similar psychological support program.
For spouse caregivers:
- The caregiver has a serious health condition of their own, such as respiratory failure, another cancer, or another critical illness.
- The patient linked to the caregiver is unwilling to take part in the trial.
- The caregiver is already taking part in another research study.
