Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between the ages of 30 and 75 years
- People who have previously been admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) for at least 48 hours
- People who have been assessed and found to have Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS), meaning at least one of the following problems has been identified through objective testing at the start of the trial:
- A nerve or muscle condition related to critical illness (such as Critical Illness Myopathy or Critical Illness Polyneuropathy), confirmed by a specific nerve and muscle test called an EMG
- A thinking or memory difficulty, identified by a standard cognitive test (MoCA score below 26)
- Signs of depression or psychological distress, identified by a standard questionnaire (PHQ-9 score of 10 or higher)
- Malnutrition, identified using specific international criteria that look at weight loss, low body weight, reduced muscle mass, and reduced food intake or illness-related factors — and/or low muscle mass and reduced grip strength measured by specific physical tests
- A disorder affecting bone health, identified by bone metabolism marker blood tests showing results outside the normal range
- People who are able to read and sign a written consent form agreeing to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a particularly severe form of malnutrition, identified by a nutrition screening tool (CONUT score of 5 or higher)
- People who are experiencing delirium (a state of acute confusion) at the time of enrolment, confirmed by a standard assessment tool (CAM or CAM-ICU)
- People who had a documented diagnosis of severe cognitive impairment or dementia recorded in their medical notes before their ICU admission
- People with any health condition — such as a serious bone, nerve, or physical disability — that is not related to PICS and would prevent full participation in the rehabilitation program (confirm with trial site)
