Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between 18 and 75 years old
- People with early to mid-stage rectal cancer (stage I to III) who are planned to have a type of bowel surgery called a low anterior resection at a participating surgical centre
- People whose tumour is located close enough to the lower end of the rectum, as measured during pre-surgery tests such as colonoscopy, imaging, or physical examination
- People whose planned surgical join (where the bowel is reconnected) will be located close to the lower end of the rectum
- People who have two or more risk factors for a complication called anastomotic leakage, as assessed by the study team
- People whose general health before surgery is rated at a certain level or below, as judged by the anaesthesia team (confirm with trial site)
- People with a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) below 30 kg/m²
- People who are willing and able to give written consent to participate, either personally or through a legally authorised representative
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a second colorectal cancer at the same time
- People whose surgical join, once completed, ends up further from the lower rectum than the trial allows
- People whose cancer has spread to other parts of the body before surgery
- People who are pregnant
- People with a mental illness or addiction disorder that would prevent them from taking part in the study
- People who need emergency surgery
- People with inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis)
- People who are allergic to a medicine called somatostatin, or who are unable to tolerate it
- People in the no-stoma group where the surgeon decides during surgery that a stoma (a bowel opening on the abdomen) is necessary
- People who have received certain pre-surgery drug treatments within 2 weeks before surgery, or pre-surgery radiotherapy within 8 weeks before surgery
- People with any other condition that would make it impossible to follow the study's requirements
