Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 18 and 75 years old
- You have symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, such as tingling, numbness, and/or pain in the hand in the area supplied by the median nerve
- A nerve conduction test (a test that checks how well your nerves are working) has confirmed carpal tunnel syndrome within the past year
- Your symptoms have been present for 3 months or longer
- You live independently (not in a care home or similar facility)
- You have already tried wearing a wrist splint at rest and other non-surgical treatments, but these have not helped
- You are able and willing to give your consent to take part
- You are willing to have surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome
- You have access to a smartphone, tablet, or computer to fill in electronic questionnaires about your symptoms
Who may not be able to join:
- You are currently unable to work due to a disability
- A physical examination has found that a specific muscle at the base of your thumb has shrunk (wasted away) (confirm with trial site)
- You have signs of a different nerve compression problem elsewhere, other than carpal tunnel syndrome
- You have rheumatoid arthritis or another condition where your immune system causes widespread inflammation in the body
- You have been diagnosed with dementia
- You have a neurological condition (a disorder affecting the brain or nerves) that affects how your hand works
- You have another serious medical condition that is not well controlled, such as high blood pressure, epilepsy, heart or lung disease, liver or kidney problems, diabetes, an underactive thyroid, or a psychiatric illness
- You have another condition that could explain the pain or tingling in your hand
- You have had a previous injury to your hand or wrist (for example, a broken wrist bone) that has affected how your hand works
- You have previously had surgery to treat carpal tunnel syndrome in either hand
- You have previously had a nerve injury in your arm or neck
