Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 50 and 85 years, of any sex.
- People who have been diagnosed with "clinically established" or "clinically probable" Parkinson's disease based on recognised 2015 diagnostic guidelines.
- People whose Parkinson's disease has progressed to at least stage 2 on a standard rating scale, and who are able to complete assessment questionnaires and MRI scans as judged by the study doctor.
- People who have been on a stable Parkinson's medication routine for at least 4 weeks before joining, and who are willing to keep that routine unchanged during the main part of the study unless a medical reason requires a change.
- People who are able to provide written consent to participate in the study.
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose parkinsonism is caused by something other than primary Parkinson's disease, or who have an atypical or secondary form of the condition.
- People who have previously had brain surgery or an implanted brain stimulation device, such as deep brain stimulation (DBS).
- People who have metal implants or implanted electrical devices that are not compatible with transcranial electrical stimulation (a type of non-invasive brain stimulation used in this trial), or who are considered unsuitable for this treatment by the study doctor for any other reason.
- People who have received non-invasive brain stimulation treatments — such as transcranial magnetic stimulation or transcranial electrical stimulation — within the past six months.
- People who have a medical reason preventing them from having an MRI scan, or who are unable to tolerate the MRI procedure.
- People with significant memory or thinking difficulties, or severe mental health symptoms, that would prevent them from completing the study assessments or following the study requirements.
- People who have started a new medication or had a dose change in the past 4 weeks for something that significantly affects sleep or level of consciousness.
- People with a history of epilepsy.
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People considered unsuitable for any other reason, as determined by the study doctor.
