Who might be able to join this trial:

• Children between 6 and 12 years old
• Children who have been diagnosed with severe, permanent nerve damage in a back tooth in the upper jaw caused by tooth decay
• Children who are considered generally healthy with no serious medical conditions (based on a standard health classification system used by anaesthesiologists)
• Children who are cooperative or very cooperative at dental appointments (based on a standard behaviour rating scale used in dentistry)
• Children whose parent or legal guardian has provided written permission to participate, and where appropriate, the child has also agreed to take part
• Children who have not taken any pain relief or anti-inflammatory medicines in the 24 hours before the dental procedure

Who may not be able to join:

• Children who have a known allergy to any ingredient in local anaesthetic (numbing) solutions
• Children who have had a frightening or upsetting dental experience in the past 12 months that could affect how their behaviour is assessed during the trial
• Children whose dental X-rays show signs of infection or damage at the tip of the root of the affected tooth
• Children who have a localised abscess or an active spreading infection at the area where the injection would be given
