Who might be able to join this trial:
Group 1 – People diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder Type II (BD-II):
- A formal diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder Type II, confirmed using standard diagnostic guidelines (DSM-5-TR)
- Currently in a remission period (symptoms are not active at the time of joining)
- Aged 18 years or older
- Has given written informed consent to participate
Group 2 – People diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD):
- A formal diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder, confirmed using standard diagnostic guidelines (DSM-5-TR)
- Currently in a remission period (symptoms are not active at the time of joining)
- Aged 18 years or older
- Has given written informed consent to participate
Group 3 – Healthy Control participants:
- No diagnosis of any psychiatric condition
- No immune system or whole-body (systemic) illness
- Has not taken any medications for at least one month before joining
- Aged 18 years or older
- Has given written informed consent to participate
Group 4 – Healthy biological father and/or mother of someone with Bipolar Disorder Type II (BD-II):
- No diagnosis of any psychiatric condition
- No immune system or whole-body (systemic) illness
- Has not taken any medications for at least one month before joining
- Aged 18 years or older
- Has given written informed consent to participate
Group 5 – Healthy biological father and/or mother of someone with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD):
- No diagnosis of any psychiatric condition
- No immune system or whole-body (systemic) illness
- Has not taken any medications for at least one month before joining
- Aged 18 years or older
- Has given written informed consent to participate
Group 6 – Healthy biological father and/or mother of a Healthy Control participant:
- No diagnosis of any psychiatric condition
- No immune system or whole-body (systemic) illness
- Has not taken any medications for at least one month before joining
- Aged 18 years or older
- Has given written informed consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
The following criteria apply across all six groups listed above:
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Diabetes
- Chronic kidney disease
- Rheumatoid arthritis (an autoimmune joint condition)
- Systemic lupus erythematosus (an autoimmune disease affecting multiple parts of the body)
- Any heart condition
- Severe neurological disorders (serious conditions affecting the brain or nervous system)
- Any immune system or whole-body (systemic) illness
- Current use of alcohol, drugs, or other substances
- For the BD-II and MDD groups: having a primary psychiatric diagnosis other than the one being studied, or not currently being in remission
- For the healthy control and parent groups: having any psychiatric diagnosis
