Healthy Control Group:

  • People who do not have a severe mental illness
  • People who score above 24 points on a standard memory and thinking test called the MMSE

Prodromal (Early Stage) Parkinson's Group:

  • People who have been diagnosed with a sleep condition called REM sleep behavior disorder (a condition where people act out their dreams during sleep)
  • People who do not have a severe mental disorder
  • People who score above 24 points on the MMSE memory and thinking test

Early Parkinson's Disease Group:

  • People who have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease that does not have a known outside cause (called idiopathic Parkinson's disease), based on recognised medical diagnostic guidelines
  • People whose Parkinson's disease is at a relatively mild stage (Hoehn-Yahr stage 2.0 or below) when assessed without medication
  • People who score above 24 points on the MMSE memory and thinking test

Who may not be able to join:

  • People with mental, cognitive, or psychological conditions that would prevent them from being able to give informed consent to participate
  • People with other health conditions that affect their ability to walk, such as joint problems in the legs, spine conditions, nerve disorders, or serious heart or lung disease
  • People who have structural changes in the brain, stroke-related conditions, or other neurological disorders
  • People with cancer, or severe liver or kidney problems (where test results are more than three times the normal range), or other serious health conditions
  • People who have claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) or have implanted medical devices or metal in their body that would interfere with MRI scanning
