Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged between 18 and 65 years
  • People who have been diagnosed with a herniated disc in the lower back, confirmed by physical examination and an MRI scan
  • People who have both ongoing lower back pain and pain that travels down the leg or elsewhere, related to the herniated disc
  • People whose lower back or radiating pain has been present for more than 3 months
  • People whose resting pain rates at 5 or higher on a 0-to-10 pain scale
  • People who are willing to take part in the study and sign a written consent form

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who are pregnant or think they may be pregnant
  • People who have a cardiac pacemaker
  • People with a history of epilepsy
  • People who have had cancer, either currently or in the past
  • People who have previously had surgery on the spine
  • People with a systemic or psychiatric condition that is not well controlled
  • People who have cauda equina syndrome or a nerve problem that is getting worse (confirm with trial site)
  • People with nerve damage in the hands or feet, including that related to diabetes or alcohol use
  • People with a disease that causes gradual breakdown of the nervous system
  • People recovering from a recent acute injury
  • People with an active infection anywhere in the body
  • People with an infection or skin condition at the area where treatment would be applied
  • People with a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) above 40
  • People with a bleeding disorder that would make the treatment unsafe
  • People with spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), spondylolysis, or spondylolisthesis (certain structural spine conditions)
  • People with bladder or bowel problems caused by nerve dysfunction
  • People with a rheumatologic (joint or autoimmune) disease
  • People with arterial blood vessel disease or pain caused by poor circulation during activity
  • People who have received physical therapy of any kind within the past 3 months
  • People who have received any injection treatment into the spine within the past 3 months
  • People with a known allergy to injection medications
