Who may be able to join
- People who are 18 years of age or older at the time of their HIV diagnosis or when enrolling in the study.
- People who have a confirmed HIV-1 diagnosis, shown through blood tests such as an HIV antibody test with a follow-up confirmatory test, or an HIV RNA test.
- People whose HIV-1 infection is confirmed through established medical measures, such as a CD4 cell count below 200 cells/μL or the presence of AIDS-related illnesses.
- For the main group (cohort phase): People who have received ongoing or periodic care at one of the participating medical centres, with available medical records including CD4 count, viral load, and treatment history, and at least 6 months of follow-up data on record.
- For the comparison analysis – Case group: People who have been diagnosed with a specific AIDS-related cancer during the study period, including Kaposi sarcoma, lymphoma, cervical cancer, anal cancer, oral cancer, colorectal cancer, or lung cancer.
- For the comparison analysis – Control group: People living with HIV who have no history of an AIDS-related cancer at the time of matching, selected from the same patient group using a specific sampling method.
- People who are able and willing to sign a written consent form allowing researchers to collect data, review medical records, and conduct follow-up (this applies to the forward-looking part of the study).
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

- People who have taken high-dose steroid medication (equivalent to 20 mg or more of prednisone per day for 2 weeks or longer) within the 6 months before the study start date.
- People with serious ongoing health conditions or major organ problems — such as severe liver disease, advanced heart failure, or severe kidney disease — that would independently affect survival or prevent participation in the study.
- People who are unable or unwilling to follow the study's procedures, including providing medical information, giving biological samples, and attending follow-up assessments.
- People who are pregnant at the time of enrolling (this applies to the forward-looking part of the study only).
- People who have any other condition that the study doctor believes would affect their ability to take part or make the study results harder to interpret (confirm with trial site).
