Who may be able to join

  • People aged 18 years or older.
  • People who are current or previous participants in the ADRC Clinical Core, the WRAP study, or other selected ADRC-affiliated studies (not including ADRC-affiliated industry-sponsored studies), or donors of special circumstance including healthy controls, if approved on a case-by-case basis by the Wisconsin Brain Donor Program (WBDP) Principal Investigator.
  • People who are a parent of an ADRC Clinical Core or WRAP study participant, or a spouse of a WRAP study participant.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People who are VA (Veterans Affairs) research subjects.
  • People with certain medical conditions that a WBDP Neuropathologist determines would make their tissue unsuitable or of limited research use, including: Hepatitis B or C, severe traumatic brain injury, a confirmed CJD (a rare brain disease) diagnosis, HIV/AIDS, brain tumours or blood clots that affect brain function in a way that makes it hard to determine diagnosis, cancer that has spread to the brain, prior radiation treatment to the head, or other infectious diseases that could be hazardous to staff handling the tissue.
  • People who were on a ventilator for a prolonged period before death, as determined by the Neuropathologist.
  • People who are unable to provide consent themselves and do not have an activated Power of Attorney for Healthcare, an activated Power of Attorney for Research, or a legal guardian — and, if at or near death, have no spouse, parent, relative, or friend willing and able to complete consent and donation paperwork.
  • People whose medical history is incomplete or whose donation paperwork is incomplete before the tissue recovery process can begin.
  • People younger than 18 years of age.
  • People who are not ADRC or WRAP participants where the expected time between death and brain removal at autopsy is greater than 16 hours (confirm with trial site, as exceptions may be made by the WBDP Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator).
  • People whose medical conditions would put researchers or staff at risk.
  • People where other circumstances, as determined by the Principal Investigator, make participation impractical or unsafe.
  • Please note: because many study participants are younger, there may be a long time between registration and actual donation. Eligibility criteria will be checked again at the time of donation, and tissue found to be unsuitable at that point may be excluded from the collection.

This study is not part of the standard drug-approval phase pathway (for example an observational, device, behavioural, or registry study), so a phase success rate does not apply.
