Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are at least 18 years old
- People whose haemoglobin level (a measure of red blood cells) is above 11g/dL, checked by a finger-prick blood test
- People who weigh more than 40 kilograms
- People who have a confirmed HIV diagnosis, shown by a previous positive blood test result
- People whose HIV is virally suppressed, meaning at least two previous HIV viral load tests (taken between 10 and 18 months apart) showed fewer than 40 copies/ml, with no results of 40 copies/ml or higher in between
- People whose most recent viral load test result was taken within the past year before the screening visit
- People who are willing to have genetic testing done
Who may not be able to join:
- Women who are currently pregnant
- People who are unable to follow study instructions or to give informed consent
- People with any condition that the study doctors consider would make participation unsafe, including serious active infections (other than HIV) in the two weeks before joining
- People who have or have had any type of cancer (for example, Kaposi's sarcoma)
- People currently being treated with steroids, immunosuppressants, or other medicines that affect the immune system
- People who have blood clotting disorders or other serious bleeding conditions
- People currently taking any medicines that could affect how their blood clots

Primary endpoints
Explore the level of immune activation in virally suppressed HIV-infected Africans in correlation with the size of the reservoir; Examine and measure the levels of latent HIV reservoirs in virally suppressed Ugandans and compare to that observed in Western (US) cohorts; Determine the role of endemic infectious diseases, nadir CD4 count, and length of fully suppressive therapy on latent HIV reservoir size; Evaluate in vitro potential latency reversal agents.
