Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are between 21 and 70 years of age
  • People who have been diagnosed with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, meaning their breathing stops or becomes very shallow 15 to 50 times per hour during sleep, as measured by an overnight sleep study
  • People who are unable to tolerate CPAP therapy — specifically, those whose CPAP machine records show they have used it for less than 2 hours per night on at least 5 nights per week (this is assessed by a sleep specialist reviewing the machine's memory)
  • People who have read, understood, and signed a consent form agreeing to take part in the study

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose sleep apnea is caused by something other than the base of the tongue, such as brain or nerve-related causes, collapse at the back of the throat near the palate, or blockage in the nose
  • People who may need an MRI scan in the future, or who already have a metal implant in their body
  • People who, in the surgeon's opinion, would face risks from surgery or from having a long-term implanted device placed in their body
  • People who, in the surgeon's opinion, are unlikely to respond to the Magnap treatment being studied
  • People who have abnormalities in the structure of the voice box, throat, windpipe, or any other part of the head, neck, or chest that would make it unsafe to place the Magnap device
  • There are no restrictions based on gender, race, or ethnicity
