Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who have been confirmed by laboratory testing to have a type of bowel cancer (adenocarcinoma) that started in the colon or rectum.
• People whose cancer has spread to the liver, but where surgery to remove the liver tumours is not possible.
• People who have no signs of cancer spread outside the liver, based on a PET/CT scan done within 6 weeks before the specialist team meeting — with the exception that small lung spots (all under 15mm and able to be surgically removed) may be acceptable.
• People who have no signs of cancer spread outside the liver, based on a CT or MRI scan of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis done within 6 weeks before the specialist team meeting — again, small removable lung spots under 15mm may be acceptable.
• People who are generally well and able to carry out everyday activities, rated as ECOG 0 or 1 (confirm with trial site if unsure what this means).
• People whose blood test results meet specific minimum standards for blood cell counts, liver function, kidney function, and protein levels (the trial site will check these).
• People who have shown their cancer is getting worse according to standard measurement criteria (called RECIST), or who have been unable to tolerate their first round of chemotherapy — and who can be enrolled before a review that happens 8–12 weeks into their second round of chemotherapy.
• People who have read, understood, and signed a consent form agreeing to take part and to attend follow-up appointments.

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have lost more than 10% of their body weight in the last 6 months.
• People with a BMI (body mass index) above 30.
• People who have had surgery to remove a local return of cancer, or cancer spread outside the liver, within the last 2 years, or surgery to remove cancer in the lymph nodes near the lung or liver within the last year.
• People who have previously been diagnosed with cancer that has spread to the bones, brain or spinal cord, or to lymph nodes in the chest or abdomen.
• People who have previously been diagnosed with breast cancer or malignant melanoma (a type of skin cancer).
• People whose original bowel tumour has not been fully removed, or was only partially removed as a palliative measure.
• People whose liver tumours are pressing against or involving the diaphragm (the muscle separating the chest and abdomen), as seen on scan.
• People who have a liver tumour larger than 10cm.
• People who have three specific poor-outlook factors present at the same time: a blood marker called CEA above 80, less than 2 years since the original cancer diagnosis, and the largest liver tumour measuring more than 5.5cm.
• People where the trial doctor has any other concern that participation would not be appropriate.
