Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with cancer that has spread (metastasised) to the liver from another part of the body
- People whose cancer is either confined to the liver, or has spread only to a limited number of sites outside the liver that have been stable or controlled for at least 4 months (treatable disease outside the liver is also allowed)
- People whose liver tumours are no larger than 3 cm across at their widest point
- People who have at least one tumour that shows up on a specific type of scan called an FDG-PET scan
- People whose blood clotting measure (called INR) is below 1.5 (note: people taking a blood thinner called Coumadin will be assessed using standard medical guidelines)
- People whose platelet count (a measure of clotting cells in the blood) is 50,000 or above
Who may not be able to join:
- People under 18 years of age
- People whose tumour is located less than 5 mm away from the stomach, bowel, or bile ducts, and where protective techniques during the procedure would not be possible
- People whose INR blood clotting measure is above 1.5 and cannot be corrected with a medical treatment called fresh frozen plasma
- People whose platelet count is below 50,000 and cannot be brought up to an acceptable level with a blood transfusion
- People who have more than 3 tumours in the liver
- People who have more than 5 sites of cancer outside the liver (this includes lymph nodes in the chest or abdomen, spots on the lungs, or cancer that has spread to the bones)
- People who have cancer spread across the lining of the abdomen (a condition called peritoneal carcinomatosis)
