Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are willing and able to sign a written consent form agreeing to participate
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who have a confirmed HIV diagnosis
- People who have been on HIV treatment (antiretroviral therapy) for at least 12 months
- People whose HIV virus levels in the blood are undetectable at screening, and have remained undetectable throughout the past 12 months (occasional very low blips may be allowed)
- People whose immune cell count (CD4+ T-cells) is above 350 cells per microlitre at screening
- People who are capable of becoming pregnant and are willing to use two forms of contraception during the study
- People who are willing to receive counselling about reducing the risk of passing HIV to others
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are pregnant or who plan to become pregnant during the study
- People with active hepatitis B infection (as determined by specific blood test results — confirm with trial site)
- People with active hepatitis C infection (as determined by specific blood test results — confirm with trial site)
- People currently taking a specific type of HIV medication called a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) who are unable to switch to a different HIV treatment regimen
- People with significant heart or stroke-related disease
- People who have had cancer within the past 5 years, or have a current cancer diagnosis
- People with severe kidney disease, as measured by a specific kidney function test (confirm with trial site)
- People with severe liver disease or unstable liver conditions
- People currently taking medications that affect the immune system
- People who are unwilling or unable to use barrier protection (such as condoms) or a prevention medication called PrEP to reduce the risk of passing HIV to sexual partners who are not known to have HIV
