Who may be able to join

  • People who are able to give informed consent to participate.
  • People who are available for the full length of the study and willing to follow all study procedures.

Who may not be able to join

  • People who have implanted metal devices or materials in their body, such as a heart pacemaker, cochlear implant, deep brain stimulation device, vagus nerve stimulation device, shrapnel, face or scalp piercings that cannot be removed, or metallic tattoos on the face or head.
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • People who have previously had a bad reaction or could not tolerate transcranial magnetic stimulation (a type of brain stimulation).
  • People who have had a fever or illness with fever within the past week.
  • People who have received another experimental drug or treatment within the past 30 days.
  • People who have had a substance abuse problem or substance use disorder within the past 6 months, not including tobacco use or occasional cannabis use.
  • People with a history of epilepsy or seizures.
  • People with a history of a penetrating brain injury, multiple sclerosis, brain surgery, or bleeding inside the skull.
  • People whose depressive symptoms are more likely caused by another psychiatric, medical, or neurological condition, including severe personality disorder or a psychotic illness.
  • People with a severe or moderate intellectual disability.
  • People with a major neurocognitive disorder (a significant decline in memory or thinking abilities).
  • People who are being held involuntarily or for whom an involuntary ECT treatment order has been filed.
