Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have a confirmed HIV diagnosis and are currently a patient at the UAB 1917 HIV Clinic
- People between the ages of 19 and 65
- People living with HIV who are currently on a stable HIV medication (antiretroviral therapy) regimen
- People without HIV who have a confirmed HIV-negative status and experience widespread body pain more than once a week for at least three months in a row
- People without HIV who have a confirmed HIV-negative status and report having no pain, or pain less than once a week, for at least three months in a row
Who may not be able to join:
- People with anemia
- People with a current or past history of blood disorders that may cause increased breakdown of red blood cells
- People with an active infection that may affect certain immune cells in the blood
- People taking certain medications (other than HIV medications) that could interfere with the study — though pain medications are generally not a reason for exclusion, provided the person has been on them stably for at least 60 days (note: methadone or buprenorphine used specifically to treat opioid addiction are excluded)
- People with a systemic rheumatic disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus
- People with cachexia (significant unintended weight loss and muscle wasting) or severe frailty
- People who have had a major surgery in the past year
- People with uncontrolled high blood pressure (above 150/95), or with heart or arterial disease
- People with poorly controlled diabetes (as measured by a blood sugar marker called HbA1c above 8%)
- People with a neurological condition such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, or epilepsy
- People with a serious psychiatric condition that required hospitalisation in the past 12 months, or who are currently experiencing active thoughts of suicide
- People with significant cognitive difficulties that would make it hard to understand and follow the study procedures
- People who are pregnant
