Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are willing and able to agree to take part in the study by giving your consent.
- You are male or female, aged between 18 and 75 years old.
- (Malignancy group only) You have been diagnosed with, or doctors suspect you may have, a cancer affecting the liver or bile ducts.
- (Control group only) You have a confirmed long-term, non-cancerous condition affecting the liver or bile ducts.
- (For the optional liver tissue sampling procedure only) You are willing to have an ultrasound-guided needle sample taken from your liver.
- (For the optional liver tissue sampling procedure only) You have had a scan of your upper abdomen (ultrasound, CT, or MRI) within the last 12 months.
- (For the optional liver tissue sampling procedure only) You have had relevant blood tests (a full blood count and clotting tests) done within 30 days before the procedure.
Who may not be able to join:
- You are not able to give your own consent to take part.
- You are currently pregnant.
- The study doctor has any concern about whether it is safe for you to take part, or feels you are not suitable for the study for any reason.
- (For the optional liver tissue sampling procedure only) You have serious other health conditions that, in the study doctor's opinion, could make the needle sampling procedure riskier for you.
- (For the optional liver tissue sampling procedure only) Your blood clotting results are outside of the acceptable range — specifically, certain clotting measurements are too high or your platelet count is too low (confirm with trial site).
- (For the optional liver tissue sampling procedure only) You have a known bleeding disorder, such as haemophilia.
- (For the optional liver tissue sampling procedure only) You are currently taking a blood-thinning medication, either as a tablet or injection.
- (For the optional liver tissue sampling procedure only) You are currently taking medication that reduces the ability of platelets to clot your blood (sometimes called antiplatelet drugs).
- (For the optional liver tissue sampling procedure only) You have a build-up of fluid in your abdomen (a condition known as ascites).
