Who may be able to join

AI generated eligibility summary. Written by an AI model from the official source data and checked on a sample basis. It can contain mistakes, so confirm anything important against the original source. How we use AI

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have been diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea (a condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep), with a score of more than 30 breathing interruptions per hour, and who are not currently using a CPAP machine (a breathing device used during sleep)
  • People who do not have obstructive sleep apnea, confirmed by a score of fewer than 15 breathing interruptions per hour and no significant daytime sleepiness based on a standard sleepiness questionnaire

Who may not be able to join:

  • People under 18 or over 75 years of age
  • People who are left-handed
  • People with a BMI (a measure of body weight relative to height) above 40
  • People who have another diagnosed sleep disorder
  • People whose sleep apnea is primarily caused by signals from the brain rather than a physical airway blockage (known as central sleep apnea), with more than 5 such events per hour
  • People with a current or past neurological condition (a condition affecting the brain or nervous system)
  • People with a respiratory condition affecting how the lungs work, or with higher-than-normal carbon dioxide levels in the blood
  • People for whom an MRI scan would not be safe — for example, due to metal implants in the body, claustrophobia, or pregnancy
  • People taking medications that may affect how MRI brain scans appear, such as certain psychiatric medications or drugs that affect blood vessels (confirm with trial site)
  • People with uncorrected vision or hearing problems
  • People who are legally protected (for example, under guardianship or similar legal protection)
  • People whose pregnancy is confirmed by a blood test during the trial
  • People identified as left-handed based on a questionnaire completed during the trial
  • People whose results from a structured mental health interview show a current mood episode, a current or recent (within the last 6 months) problem with substance use (not including tobacco), an eating disorder, or a diagnosis of bipolar disorder or schizophrenia (current or past)
