Who may be able to join
- The person has completed at least primary school education.
- The person has been diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's disease dementia based on recognised medical guidelines (NIA-AA criteria).
- The person has had a brain MRI scan during the screening period that matches an Alzheimer's disease diagnosis (a CT scan may be used instead only if MRI is medically not possible for that person).
- The person scores 4 or less on a standard test used to help distinguish Alzheimer's disease from other types of dementia (the Modified Hachinski scale).
- The person scores 15 or higher on a standard memory and thinking test (the MMSE) at screening.
- People already taking stable doses of common Alzheimer's medications (acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and/or memantine) may be eligible, as long as the dose has not changed in the 90 days before screening and no changes are planned during the study.
- The person has a primary caregiver who is willing to take responsibility for overseeing treatment and monitoring the person's condition throughout the entire study, as required by the study rules.
- The person has a body mass index (a measure of weight relative to height) below 38 at screening.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- The person's brain scan suggests a type of dementia other than Alzheimer's disease.
- The person has a history of their memory or thinking improving or being restored based on their medical records.
- The person has a history of, or currently has, a significant mental health condition such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depressive disorder that could affect their ability to take part in the study and complete all assessments (note: mild depression or low mood related to Alzheimer's disease does not automatically exclude someone; use of antidepressants or certain anti-seizure medications for non-seizure purposes is allowed if the dose has been stable for at least 60 days before enrolment).
- The person has a pacemaker (unless it is a newer compatible model), large metal implants, or implanted electronic devices such as cochlear implants, magnetic metal drug pumps, nerve stimulators, diaphragm stimulators, injection pumps, physiological stimulators, or mechanical heart valves.
- The person has magnetic metal foreign objects or prosthetics in their eye, or magnetic metal joints or ferromagnetic foreign objects anywhere in their body.
- The person has epilepsy or claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces).
- The person has received antibiotics or dental/gum (periodontal) treatment in the last 6 months.
- The person has taken aspirin, warfarin, or other blood-thinning (anticoagulant) medications in the last 6 months.
- The person has any of the following results from blood tests done at screening: a blood clotting disorder; a haemoglobin level of 10 g/dl or below (indicating anaemia); poorly controlled diabetes (HbA1C above 8); or a positive test for HIV, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C.
