Main study – Case group:

  • Adults who have osteoarthritis in the hip joint and are scheduled for a planned total hip replacement surgery

Main study – Control group:

  • Adults who do not have arthritis and are having an emergency total hip replacement surgery due to a trauma (such as a fracture)

Rheumatoid arthritis sub-study:

  • Adults who have rheumatoid arthritis in the hip joint and are scheduled for a planned total hip replacement surgery

Who may not be able to join:

  • People with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher
  • People under 18 or over 74 years of age
  • People in the main study osteoarthritis group who also have diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or metabolic syndrome
  • People in the rheumatoid arthritis sub-study who also have diabetes or metabolic syndrome (having rheumatoid arthritis is not an exclusion for this sub-study)
