Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who are able to give informed consent to take part in a study
- People whose situation means they are eligible to receive free HIV care services in Mexico
- People who are living with HIV
- People who have injected drugs in the last 30 days
- People who are not currently on methadone replacement therapy
- People who are willing to talk about medication-assisted treatment (a type of treatment for drug use) with a peer
- People who are willing to sign a form allowing the study team to access their medical records
- People who are willing to provide contact and location information so the study team can reach them
- People who are willing to attend follow-up visits during the study
- People who are able to communicate in Spanish

- People who meet at least one of the following situations related to their HIV treatment:
- Not currently in possession of HIV medication, or not taking prescribed HIV medication
- Having had at least one gap of 4 or more days in HIV medication in the past 90 days
- Having missed 2 or more HIV clinic appointments in the last 9 months, or never having been engaged in HIV care
- Not having had a viral load test (a blood test that measures how much HIV is in the body) in the past 6 months
- Self-reporting a detectable viral load within the past 6 months
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have not injected drugs in the last 30 days, or who do not have a confirmed opioid use disorder
- People who are not living with HIV
- People who are currently receiving methadone treatment
- People who are unwilling to talk about methadone treatment with a peer
- People who do not screen positive for depression on the initial check
- People who are not able to give informed consent
- People who do not speak Spanish
- People who plan to move out of the city during the study period
- People whose situation means they are not eligible to receive free HIV care services in Mexico
- People who, in the judgment of the study staff, show signs of significant psychological disturbance or severe difficulty with thinking and understanding that could affect their ability to understand the study procedures
