Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who are already scheduled to have heart surgery for a medical reason, such as bypass surgery (CABG), heart valve replacement (aortic valve), replacement of part of the main artery from the heart (ascending aorta), or a combination of these procedures
- People who have a documented history of an irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation (AF), either in episodes (paroxysmal) or ongoing (persistent)
- People who are willing and able to give their informed consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose main heart rhythm problem is atrial flutter (a specific type of irregular heartbeat) rather than atrial fibrillation
- People whose left atrial chamber (a part of the heart) has been measured at 6 cm or larger
- People who have previously had heart surgery that required opening the sac surrounding the heart (the pericardium)
- People who are scheduled for any of the following types of surgery: heart transplant, complex surgery for a heart condition present from birth, surgery where the only reason is to insert a heart pump (ventricular assist device), or repair or replacement of the mitral or tricuspid heart valves
- People who currently live in a long-term care facility (such as a nursing home)
