Who might be able to join this trial:

For the person living with dementia:

  • A doctor has documented a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia in their medical records
  • Living in the community (not in a care facility)
  • Aged 60 years or older
  • Experiencing more than one sleep problem more than three times per week, based on a standard sleep behaviour scale
  • Has no untreated sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea or restless legs syndrome
  • Able to walk, with or without a walking aid
  • Has no serious medical condition where life expectancy is less than six months
  • Has an eligible caregiver (as described below)

For the caregiver:

  • Lives with the person who has dementia
  • Aged 18 years or older
  • Is a family member, significant other, or friend of the person with dementia
  • Has regularly helped the person with dementia with at least one everyday task — such as bathing, dressing, toileting, shopping, cooking, or managing medications — for the past six months
  • Has a score above 5 on a standard sleep quality questionnaire, indicating some level of sleep difficulty
  • Has a score of 23 or above on a standard thinking and memory assessment
  • Is able to communicate in English

Who may not be able to join:

  • The person living with dementia is confined to bed
  • The person living with dementia has a serious medical condition where life expectancy is less than six months
  • The caregiver is a paid or professional carer
  • Either the person with dementia or the caregiver does not meet the eligibility criteria listed above — both must be eligible for the pair to participate
