Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are willing and able to give their consent to take part in the study
- People aged 18 years or older
- People who have been diagnosed with small liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma, or HCC) that is at an early stage — meaning 1 to 3 tumours each smaller than 3 cm, with good liver function and good general health — along with liver scarring (cirrhosis) from any cause
- People who have been diagnosed with small early-stage liver cancer as described above, but without liver scarring (cirrhosis)
- People whose liver cancer diagnosis was confirmed within the 3 months before the first study visit
- People who had liver cancer that was completely removed or destroyed more than 6 months ago and have now been diagnosed with a new liver cancer in a different part of the liver
- People without cirrhosis whose liver cancer diagnosis has been confirmed by a tissue biopsy (for people without cirrhosis, scans alone are not enough to confirm the diagnosis for this trial)
Who may not be able to join:
- People the study doctor considers unsuitable, for example if they feel the person would not be able to follow the study procedures
- People whose liver cancer and cirrhosis has reached a more advanced stage (classified as BCLC stage B or C)
- People who have previously had a liver transplant (note: people currently on a liver transplant waiting list may still be eligible if they meet all other criteria)
- People who are already taking part in a related study called the Pearl study
- People who were previously treated for liver cancer and now have cancer returning in the exact same spot in the liver
- People who have received any liver cancer treatment in the 3 months before the first study visit — including surgery, ablation, chemotherapy, radiation, or other experimental treatments
- People who cannot have an MRI scan — for example due to claustrophobia, certain metal implants or devices in the body, pregnancy, or other conditions the MRI operator considers unsafe (this applies to a specific imaging subgroup within the trial)
