Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are 18 years of age or older
  • People who have a confirmed HIV diagnosis
  • People whose CD4 count (a measure of immune system strength) is at or below 100 cells/mm³, tested within the past 4 weeks; OR people whose CD4 count has previously dropped to 100 cells/mm³ or below and who have been completely off HIV treatment for 6 months or more; OR people who have never been on HIV treatment and whose CD4 count is at or below 100 cells/mm³
  • People who are able to start, restart, or switch to an effective HIV treatment within 4 weeks of joining the trial

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have a known allergy or serious reaction to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any antibiotic in the macrolide family
  • People who have a personal or family history of a heart condition called QT-prolongation (an electrical problem with the heart's rhythm)
  • People who are seriously unwell and need immediate or ongoing hospital care (this is assessed by the trial doctors at each site)
  • People who are already taking azithromycin in an unapproved way, or who need to take azithromycin or a similar antibiotic for more than 7 days
