Who may be able to join
- People who are over 18 years of age
- People who have had a breast cancer return in the same breast, or a new breast cancer forming (either a non-invasive type called DCIS or an invasive cancer)
- People whose tumour measured less than 3.0 cm across at its widest point when examined after removal, including all parts of the tumour (both invasive and non-invasive)
- People who completed their previous course of radiotherapy to the whole or part of the breast more than 5 years ago (previous radiotherapy to the lymph node area is also allowed)
- People whose cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes, based on clinical assessment
- People whose surgery removed the tumour with clear edges, meaning no cancer cells were found at the outer edges of the removed tissue
- People who have fully recovered from surgery, with the wound completely healed and no signs of infection
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People whose cancer has appeared in more than one separate area of the breast (though cancer in multiple spots within the same section of the breast is allowed)
- People whose tumour is made up entirely of a type called lobular carcinoma
- People with a very advanced local tumour classified as T4 (confirm with trial site)
- People whose cancer has spread to the lymph nodes or to other parts of the body
- People who have a serious non-cancer illness affecting the heart, lungs, or immune system (such as lupus or scleroderma) that would make radiotherapy unsafe
- People who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who have a breast implant or a pacemaker on the same side as the affected breast
- People who are not able to start radiotherapy within 16 weeks of their breast surgery (or last breast procedure), or within 12 weeks of finishing their last round of chemotherapy
- People where the surgical site cannot be clearly identified for radiation targeting purposes (special reconstructive surgery is allowed if the tumour site has been clearly marked with surgical clips)
- People with a psychiatric condition that would prevent them from giving informed consent or following the trial requirements
- People who experienced moderate or severe long-term skin reactions from their previous radiotherapy treatment
- People who have had breast cancer in both breasts, either currently or in the past
