Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who are scheduled for coronary artery bypass grafting (heart bypass surgery) and/or aortic valve replacement, regardless of whether other valve surgery is also being performed at the same time
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose surgery is unplanned or scheduled outside of regular hours (emergency or urgent surgery)
- People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding (pregnancy testing will be done before enrolment to rule this out in all women who could potentially become pregnant)
- People who have a known heart valve infection (endocarditis) at the time of screening
- People who have previously taken part in this same trial
- People who currently have an active infection of any kind, including bacterial, viral, or fungal infections
- People who have known liver cirrhosis (serious scarring of the liver)
- People with a known severely low platelet count (the blood cells that help with clotting) below a certain level
- People with a known severely low white blood cell count below a certain level
- People who are currently on a waiting list to receive a heart transplant
- People who have previously received a major organ transplant
- People who have certain specific heart or thyroid conditions, including a thickened heart muscle that blocks blood flow, active inflammation of the heart, stiffening of the heart's surrounding sac, or an untreated overactive or underactive thyroid
- People who have received chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer within the last 6 months
- People who currently have evidence of active cancer, except for certain low-risk skin cancers, a specific type of cervical cell change, or stable prostate cancer
- People with a known eye condition called narrow-angle glaucoma
- People with a known condition called phenylketonuria (a rare inherited condition affecting how the body processes a certain amino acid)
- People with Type 1 diabetes
- People with a known heart rhythm condition called long QT syndrome
- People with a known allergy to any of the medications being used in the study
- People whose participation the trial investigators believe could put them at risk, affect the reliability of the results, or significantly interfere with their ability to take part
- People with certain blood vessel disease outside of the heart (identified through a standard pre-surgical assessment) will not be eligible for one specific part of the trial related to blood flow management during surgery (confirm with trial site)
